Information on International Clinical Electives from MSU Community Campuses

Students start in their home community and speak to the person responsible for electives in each community.  The student does the leg work and must provide a letter from the international site stating that he or she has been approved for the elective and the dates of the elective.  The student must also provide a brief elective course description.  The community campus administrator sends this information along with an elective request form to the department on the MSU main campus associated with the elective.  A student doing an international elective in Cardiology, for example, would have the information sent to the Department of Internal Medicine.  Electives are 4 weeks in length and are worth 6 credits.  Students can request additional aid to cover most of the expenses.  This is not an automatic increase.  Students must supply the MSU Office of Financial Aid with documentation of the costs.

Typically, the policy of most medical schools, including the MSU College of Human Medicine, is that students must complete their required 3rd year clerkships (6 clerkships/ each 8 weeks in length) before they can take any electives.

Students are required to have MEDEX evacuation insurance (see information on MEDEX), and must submit emergency contact information.

Here is a list of sites students have used to select an elective.
