Costa Rica Spring Break Program

This is a 1 credit MSU Office of Study Abroad Program developed by the College of Human Medicine for pre-clinical students in the College of Human Medicine and in the College of Osteopathic Medicine. The International Health Central American Institute based in San Jose, Costa Rica is the host institution.

Program Description

Is healthcare a right? Costa Rica, a developing country, has adopted the view that its citizens have a right to healthcare. How is an equitable and effective healthcare system developed? These and other questions drive this program’s exploration of the universal healthcare system in Costa Rica. Participants will meet with experts, interact with patients, visit hospitals, and a rural clinic. In addition, participants will enjoy the beautiful beaches of Tamarindo and Langosta National Park for two days.

Some aspects of the program:
- History and proposals for reform of the healthcare system; visit to National Museum.
- Compare public and private health care; visit public and private hospitals.
- Speak to patients about their experiences.
- Learn about rural healthcare clinics.
- Explore the impact of globalization.
- Tour INBio Institute, a facility for bio prospecting to develop new drugs.
- Find out about some tropical diseases.
- Relax at beach/park.

Program cost includes home stay with a family, breakfast, dinner, laundry and the trip to Manuel Antonio. Airfare and spending money are not included. Apply with the MSU Office of Study Abroad.
